Where to eat in Beaulieu-sur-Mer: our tips, and our place in the picture

A short practical guide to eating well in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, between Nice and Monaco, and a word on what Le Catalan has been bringing to the town since 1985.

Where to eat in Beaulieu-sur-Mer: our tips, and our place in the picture

Beaulieu-sur-Mer is one of those towns people drive through without stopping, squeezed between Nice and Monaco on the lower corniche. A mistake. It's one of the most pleasant spots on the French Riviera for a quiet day, and one of the most interesting for eating well without blowing the budget. Here's a short practical guide, and a word on where Le Catalan has been sitting in the local landscape for the past forty years.

Why Beaulieu

Eight kilometres from Nice, ten minutes by train from Monaco, Beaulieu offers what you rarely find side by side: a real marina, a town that lives all year round, one of the mildest climates in Europe (the bay is nicknamed "Little Africa"), and a cuisine influenced by the whole Mediterranean. It isn't a tourist theme park: locals actually live here, shops stay open, markets run year-round.

That character carries over into restaurants. Beaulieu has a handful of very good addresses, solid neighbourhood places, and few tourist traps. It's one of the rare spots on the coast where you can eat decently at lunch without feeling fleeced.

How to pick a good restaurant in Beaulieu

A few markers to help you, whether you're passing through or living here:

  • Look at the menu before sitting down. A very long menu is rarely a good sign: impossible to keep everything fresh. A short menu that changes with the seasons is almost always better.
  • Check whether the place is open all year. Good houses survive the winter because they have a loyal local crowd. It's an excellent quality indicator.
  • Be wary of "everything for €12" on the coast. Beautiful produce costs money. You can eat very well for 25 to 35 euros at lunch, but rarely below, unless you pick a slice of pizza or a simple salad.
  • Prefer terraces just off the sea. Restaurants right on the harbour are often more expensive, without always being better. Two or three streets back, you often find the sweet spot.

Where Le Catalan fits in

The house was founded in Beaulieu in 1985. Forty years on, we're still on Boulevard du Maréchal Leclerc, a few steps from the sea, lined with palm trees. In our own small way, that's a testimony to loyalty: to a place, and to a way of doing things.

Our positioning is that of a neighbourhood restaurant that also welcomes travellers. People eat with us at lunch during the week (regulars, local professionals) as much as in the evening as a couple or family (residents, well-informed visitors). Our menu features Mediterranean classics, fresh pasta, grilled fish, and our wood-fired pizzas, which we cover in detail in this dedicated article on the wood-fired oven.

On price, we try to stay reasonable, with a dish of the day around 19 euros (excluding weekends and summer) and an accessible menu. The point isn't to be the cheapest table in town, but the one with the best value-for-money on fresh produce.

What to try first

If you're coming for the first time, here are a few ideas:

  • Lunch on a weekday: the dish of the day, which changes with the market. The best way to get our style in a single plate.
  • Dinner as a couple: a bottle of Provence white, two grilled fish of the day, a terrace under the palm trees. It's, without exaggeration, one of the simplest and most enjoyable experiences you can have on the coast.
  • Sunday with the family: fresh pasta, pizzas for the kids, homemade desserts. The house is built for long tables.

To understand how these offers move month by month, read our article on summer seasonal produce, or the broader piece on Le Catalan's Mediterranean cooking.

Coming, booking, finding the team

Le Catalan is open seven days a week, lunch and dinner, non-stop from 12:00 to 22:30. A reduced menu (pizza, salad, snacks) is served between 14:30 and 18:45 for the afternoon lull. We're walkable from the SNCF station and the marina.

To discover the team and the spirit of the house, take a look at our story or the gallery. To book, just head to the contact page or call the restaurant directly. We'll be happy to welcome you, on the terrace under the palm trees or inside, near the wood-fired oven.

See you soon in Beaulieu.
